Spring Cleaning Guide Pt. 4 | Refrigerator

For the last part of our spring cleaning guide, we’re going to show you the best and easiest way to deep clean your refrigerator.

If you’re like most people, you stock and store up your fridge and pantry with essentials to avoid needing to go out into the cold during the winter. It’s a natural human instinct.

However, now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to throw out those left-overs from who knows when to make room for summer barbeques. It’s also a good idea because moldy food in the fridge is the number one cause of spring time sickness.

How to Deep Clean the Fridge

  1. Toss anything that’s old or has gone bad. Check for expiration dates and smell check left-overs. As a general rule of thumb, if it’s been there untouched for more than a week, get rid of it.
  2. Take all the food out of the fridge. If you’re concerned about perishables like milk, just move them to a part of the fridge that you aren’t cleaning.
  3. Start at the top and work your way down. If your shelves are removable, take out each one and wash it in hot soapy water. If they’re not, use a rag soaked with hot soapy water. You can use a butter knife to get into the crevices where stubborn foods like to hang out. Pro Tip: Avoid using chemicals to clean your fridge to avoid anything seeping into the food you feed your family with.
  4. Rinse the shelves and dry them. Before putting the shelves back in, wipe down the walls and the refrigerator door, being careful to spend time on each shelf of the door as well.
  5. Put food back into the fridge. Throw in a box of baking soda to help keep the fridge smelling great longer.
  6. Wipe down the door’s gasket (the rubber thing around the door that helps it to seal). When the gasket is dirty, it isn’t able to seal as well as it should so your food isn’t kept as fresh.
  7. Pull the grill off the bottom of the fridge and vacuum the coils to keep your fridge working it’s best.
