Clean Your Windows Like A Pro

In Las Vegas, we get the majority of our rain in the summer. Combine that with periodic heavy winds and your windows are probably covered with layers of dirt and water spots. If you want anyone to be able to see all your amazing holiday decorations in the windows, it’s time to get to work. Here are some DIY window washing tips to give you that streak free shine to show off your window pumpkin patches.

Get the right tools

It won’t matter what product or method you use for window washing if you’ve got the wrong tools. A major reason windows tend to look streaky or linty is because of the tools you use. The best thing you can do for your windows is use a squeegee that has a soft rubber edge. You can also use coffee filters. While it sounds crazy, it actually makes perfect sense! The texture of the coffee filter is more absorbent than newspaper and it doesn’t leave behind lint like paper towels. Plus, they’re cheap!

Use bleach to conquer mildew

Mildew may not be as big an issue in Las Vegas, but it is definitely still possible. You can tell if you have mildew spots by checking for darkened spotting on wooden window frames. Bleach is a great way to solve that ugly problem. Mix two ounces of bleach, one ounce of laundry detergent and a quart of water. Cover your hands with gloves and use a sponge to apply the solution. Let it sit for 10 minutes and wash it away.

Ditch commercial cleaners

Truthfully, commercial window cleaners aren’t great. They’re expensive and put a lot of harsh chemicals into the air you breath. They simply aren’t necessary to get window washing done right. There are so many homemade window cleaners that you can use. Most, if not all of the materials are probably in your kitchen right now. Try out one or two and you’ll see.

Start Inside

The windows inside your home won’t be anywhere near as dirty as the ones outside. Leave the dirt and grime outside by starting on the windows inside.

Remember the screens!

If your windows are dirty, it makes sense that the screens in front of them are dirty. Screens are harder to clean so it also makes sense that you avoid doing it. However, if you take the time to clean them, you won’t be sorry. Grab a wide, soft-bristled brush and hot soapy water. Scrub both sides of the screen. When you’re done, either shake it or tap it against something to release the dirt. Rinse it with a hose and let it dry. When you pop it back into place, you’ll definitely see a difference in how clean your window looks.
