How Often Should You Clean Windows and Screens?

There are certain home maintenance projects that no one likes to do. For most people, one of those projects is probably cleaning the windows. So, the natural response is to put off the project for as long as possible. When it can’t be put off any more, most people opt for the professional window cleaning Las Vegas residents rely on.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that (trust us, we love your business!), you can save yourself quite a bit of money if you maintain your windows in between those professional cleanings. If you follow these suggestions, you can make sure your windows look great year round.

Wash your window screens at least once a year. Ideally, you should do this in the spring time to welcome in all the bright sunshine! Here is how:

  1. Take all the screens out of your windows and mark them so you know where they go when it is time to put them back.
  2. Head to the yard and rinse them with the hose. If you don’t have a yard, you can clean them in the bathtub. Just remember to clean out your tub once you are dome.
  3. To clean the screens, use a solution that is made of one part ammonia and three parts of water. Add the solution to a spray bottle and spray the screens after you’ve wet them. Scrub away the grime with a brush or sponge made of nylon.
  4. Rinse the screens clean and leave them in the sun to dry.
  5. Clean the windows and the window frame.

Your windows should be cleaned twice a year. If you only wash the windows once a year when you wash the screens, you can definitely get  by. Your home and your allergies will be much happier, however, if your don’t skip the second cleaning. Follow these tips to wash your windows:

  1. Mix a solution of five drops of liquid dish detergent, two gallons of water and a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol. Pre-clean the windows with a sponge.
  2. Use a microfiber cloth or a coffee filter to clean a strip about one inch thick at the top of the window.
  3. Use a squeegee and place it inside of the strip that you just cleaned. Pull down in a smooth, moderately quick strokes.
  4. Repeat until the window is clean. Just remember to overlap just a little into the area that is already clean.
