Different Types of Glass Stains

There is haze on your windows that is frustrating and you want it gone. Did you know that stain could be one of a few different types? Learn the different types of window stains so you can properly address the issue.

Types of Glass Stains

At the most basic level, there are three types of stains you are most likely to see on your glass:

1. Hard water stains: This is the most common kind of glass stain. They tend to look like greyish white water spots. What you see is basically the mineral compounds in water after the water evaporates away. You can find them most often on shower doors and windows near sprinklers. The easiest way to prevent this is to avoid water exposure. You can’t help this in the shower but you can redirect your sprinkler head so that it doesn’t spray the window. For the shower door, apply a sealant to repel the water stains.

2. Glass oxidation: This happens on windows with metal screens that get wet regularly. The oxidation leaves a grey haze over your windows on the outside of your home. You can use a glass sealant to protect your windows from this haze once you have washed them properly.

3. Chemical damage: This happens accidentally to most people when they use aggressive chemicals for window washing. After a few uses, the chemicals start etching the windows. So this type of stain is actually more like a scratch. To remove the hazy look of etching, you have to restore the glass. You can buy window sealants and fillers from a Las Vegas cleaning company who specializes in window washing.

Removing the Stains

Thankfully, these stains don’t have to be permanent. There are two different methods you can use to get you windows crystal clear again.

Chemical Removal

You can get your windows sparkling again by using more aggressive acidic or alkaline cleaners to gut the grime. Just be aware of overuse. These chemicals can cause just as much damage as they do good. You want to make sure you get the right kind of cleaner. The wrong cleaner on the wrong glass can cause the chemical damage mentioned before.

As long as you use them appropriately, aggressive chemical cleaners certainly have their benefits. They work faster than other methods and can be less expensive as well.

Glass Polishing

This is a stain removal method that cleans your windows and fills the tiny grooves in the glass. Those grooves are what makes stains come back again. Unfortunately, this method is pricier than the chemical removal of stains. However, it is also less dangerous and won’t cause extra harm to your windows.

To do this method, you will need a buffer, polishing pads, and a special polish made just for buffers. If this sounds like too much work, you can always call a Las Vegas window washing company to do it for you. Just call the experts at J & J Window Wash.
