On April 15, nurses, parents and children all rushed to view out the windows of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. What was so intriguing? The window cleaners were dressed up as different superheroes. Captain America, Spiderman and Batman swung from the ropes brightening up everyone’s day. The children were ecstatic. They were take pictures with them.
This is gradually becoming a semi-annual tradition for this hospital. The window cleaners initially decided to this because some of the children as so sick. A lot of them may live the rest of their life not able to leave the hospital. Even though some children were nearly too frail to get out of bed, the found the strength to go see their favorite superhero. Though it is not much, this gives the children a little bit of happiness. They feel hope and for a moment forget that they are even in the hospital.
An eight-year-old suffering from a failing colon expressed how amazed he was at how high in the air they were. His mother stated that Spiderman is his favorite superhero. The young boy spent over half an hour gazing at the window washers in utter amazement.
The window washers made their first appearance in superhero costumes in 2013 after the foreman of the crew saw a similar news story in another city. At first the cleaners were not excited about putting on tights. The foreman expressed how happy it will make the children. Eventually they all agreed and now it has been a sort of tradition.
Spiderman, also known as one of the washers, stated, “They smile and wave their hands. They are so happy. I like (dressing up) because I like to see their happy faces.”
News reports of similar window cleaners occurred first at Evelina London Children’s Hospital in England. Photos of them became an Internet sensation and now window cleaners everywhere are doing this.
At Lurie Children’s Hospital, an entire day is planned out for both the hospital staff and window washers to come dressed as superheroes. “Superhero Day” is kept secret from families and patients until the last minute. Doctors at the hospital believe that the children’s happiness generated from this day may help them heal faster. Of course, there is no scientific facts to back it up. Dr. Stewart Goldman, a neuro-oncologist, stated “There is power in laughter and joy and excitement.”
