Window Washers encounter close call

Window washers have to be extremely high up sometimes. Let’s be real, that scaffold they have to stand on doesn’t look very stable. So it comes as no surprise that there have been multiple incidents of window washers falling in cities all over the world. Luckily, these window washers survived the fall.

On June 27, a window cleaner in the UK fell to what he thought was his death. The 34-year-old man was cleaning the windows of a home in Dunnikier Estate. He misplaced his feet and the ladder fell from beneath him. This sent the man falling to the ground.

No one was home at the house he was cleaning so no one saw him fall. The man broke his leg, and the bone was sticking out. Not having another option, he dragged himself to the front of the property, yelling for help. Moments later, nearby residents called for an ambulance.

The man explained that if those other people hadn’t done that, he might have died. He was in such excruciating pain. One of the residents that came to his rescue happened to be one of his customers. The man stated, “She kept joking about my singing to keep me conscious.”

He was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent a five-hour procedure. This is likely to be the first of many more surgeries. After 12 years washing windows, his career is at the end now.

Another incident occurred on June 4 in Maryland at the National Institutes of Health. One of the cables of the platform snapped. This caused the platform to turn to a vertical position, leaving the two men dangling from the end. They were about 80 feet in the air.

Everyone inside the building filed outside to see what was going on. People were yelling call 911. Firefighters arrived within minutes.

The truck extended an aerial bucket next to the window washers. The firefighters swiftly pulled the window washers to safety. The crowd cheered on the firefighters during the 22 minute long rescue.

If the window washers were stuck just five feet higher, the fire truck would not have been able to reach the two men. This was an extremely lucky situation for them. The alternative plan would have the firefighters come down from the roof on rope lines to save the two men.

Paramedics transported both window washers to the nearest hospital. They both only suffered minor injuries so were released within a few hours.

Later that same day an industrial-size crane got rid of the tangled wires from the building. NIH’s Division of Occupational Health and Safety is undergoing an investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

Even though they take every safety precaution, accidents can still occur. The window washers at J & J Window Cleaning are well-trained with the proper equipment to take on any cleaning job.
